Round 1 – Morris Claibourne, cornerback, LSU In the 2011/12 season, Dallas showed more weaknesses on defense than offense, and therefore took a defensive player in their first pick. Morris Claibourne was regarded as easily the best cornerback in the draft, and it was a moment of magic from Jerry Jones getting the Cowboys to pick at number 6 instead of 14. This is a big addition to the team. Expect big things from the LSU man. Round 3 – Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State An interesting pick by Dallas, taking yet another defensive player. On Saturday, Archie posted an article on Jerome Henderson, in which he outlined the various changes in attitude and coaching style the Cowboys' new defensive backs coach will bring to the position. Like Archie, I believe the Henderson hire is one of Dallas' key offseason moves - and not merely because the secondary has been pitiful for much of the last two seasons, and could therefore use a coaching upgrade, but because he specializes in a certain defensive style and philosophy. As Chia noted in his post, Henderson's coaching stops include stints with the Jets and Browns, where he has tutored…

Less than two weeks ago, the Cowboys O-line coach Bill Callahan talked about the tentative starting line-up for his O-line. Two weeks ago, rabblerouser looked at how the Cowboys have been retooling their roster this year, which holes are being filled by free agents, which holes are plugged with rookies and which holes could remain soft spots. Related: Cowboys Offseason 2012: Retooling The Roster Inspired by his post , I wanted to understand just how much of a roster churn the Cowboys have undergone in the last two years. Remember, the last two seasons were the first consecutive non-winning seasons since the 5-11 years in 2001 and 2002, so a good degree of churn is to be expected. To determine the level of churn…

  • Who Wins Games for the Cowboys: Offense or Defense?

    15 May 2012 | 7:01 am
Some of the more lively debates among Dallas Cowboys fans take place when the talk turns to the roles the offensive or defensive units play in winning or losing games. The arguments exchanged in those debates typically sound something like this: In 2011, the offense scored less than 17 points in five games. The Cowboys lost all five games. Therefore the offense sucks. In 2011, the Cowboys were 6-1 in games in which the defense held opponents to less than 20 points. Had the defense held more opponents below 20 points, the Cowboys would have made the playoffs. Therefore the defense sucks. If,…

It is the season of unbridled optimism. Well, it is for me. And I am always looking for things that will feed my growing hope for the Dallas Cowboys to have great success in 2012. I am, after all, the keeper of the Kool Aid around here. The great thing is that it is not much of a stretch to find good signs for the team. The roster looks to be getting younger and more talented, there is a real sense that Jason Garrett's Cowboy Way is gaining traction, and even the most cynical of the beat writers that hang around Valley Ranch seem to be getting a positive vibe from the team. • Cowboys Appear to Get Decent Value in Later Rounds

    Matt Cordon
    29 Apr 2012 | 1:59 am
I am not going to write too many negative things about the Dallas Cowboys draft. One guy at ESPN did, but I won’t. National Football League Draft (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Many people I know thought highly of the trade to get Morris Claiborne, and I like the change in strategy. I really thought that Dallas would get the second-round pick back by dealing Mike Jenkins, but that did not happen. The third-round pick of Tyrone Crawford has merit, though not everyone is sold. At the least, he should provide more depth on the defensive line, even if he looks a little bit more like an outside…
  • Cowboys Grab Boise State DE Tyrone Crawford in the 3rd

    Matt Cordon
    28 Apr 2012 | 1:55 am
Instead of taking a defensive tackle with the #14 pick on Thursday, the Cowboys traded up to grab a corner in Morris Claiborne. Several thought the Cowboys would find a way to get back into the second round by trading cornerback Mike Jenkins, but it didn’t happen. Instead, the Cowboys stayed put at #81 and took Boise State defensive end Tyrone Crawford. It was hardly a pick that grabbed headlines, but it also did not draw anything negative. None of the commentary I’ve seen has said that this was a bad pick. Here is a video showing a few “highlights” from a couple Boise…
  • Dallas Cowboys Draft CB Morris Claiborne with the #6 Pick

    Matt Cordon
    26 Apr 2012 | 8:22 pm
A few have suggested that the Dallas Cowboys might move up in the 2012 Draft, but almost nobody counted on what happened. NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 26: Morris Claiborne (R)from LSU holds up a jersey as he stands on stage after he was selected #6 overall by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of during the 2012 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall on April 26, 2012 in New York City. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife) Several thought that Alabama safety Mark Barron would be gone by the #14 pick, so the draft gurus started saying that Dallas would take a defensive tackle. One name thrown out…
  • The Most Miserable First-Round Cowboys Bust Was David LaFleur?

    Matt Cordon
    26 Apr 2012 | 3:23 pm
It was often a challenge to find Bobby Carpenter on the screen while watching him play for the Cowboys. Fortunately, we have arrows. Yahoo ran a post about “sad, miserable first-round flops for all 32 teams.” The results were largely predictable, but I don’t think the selection for the worst Dallas Cowboys draft pick was the best (or, um, worst): Dallas Cowboys: David LaFleur, 22nd overall, 1997. In a four-year career, LaFleur averaged fewer than 200 yards receiving per season. That’s about 12 yards per game, which isn’t what you’re looking for out of a…
  • Mel Kiper’s “A” Draft Has Dallas Taking a Safety, Linebacker, and Corner

    Matt Cordon
    22 Apr 2012 | 4:44 pm
Mark Barron (#4) remains Mel Kiper’s choice as the Cowboys’ first-round pick. Alabama safety Mark Barron has been the Cowboys’ first-round selection on Mel Kiper‘s board for quite some time. In Kiper’s latest post, he lists what he considers to be an “A” draft for each team, listing the picks for the top three rounds. He still has Barron at the top of the list, but he no longer has Dallas taking an offensive lineman in the second round. Instead, he predicts that Dallas will take Clemson OLB Andre Branch. Here is his post: Top needs: G/C, CB, OLB, SS,…

  • Mackenzy Bernadeau Out 12-Weeks with Hip Surgery

    Joe Rodriguez
    16 May 2012 | 2:11 pm
Just a few days ago Cowboys offensive line Coach Bill Callahan stated that Mackenzy Bernadeau was slated to be our RG, well things may have just changed. Bernadeau had hip surgery that was done to avoid it becoming a chronic issue. At first glance this sounds like a red flag, but the Cowboys knew about this ahead of time when they brought him in, and likely knew this was going to happen; however, this does open the door wide open for the RG position. We could see Bill Nagy, David Arkin, and Ron Leary battle it out for that guard spot, and to me, its anyone’s guess who will be our…

There’s been some recent discussions on who will land the #3 WR spot, and I think it’ll be wide open, Garrett pretty much said so. But the thing the Cowboys are also looking for is the #4 WR and quality depth this offseason. The Cowboys escaped a disastrous scenario when Dez and Austin were dinged up and injured during the season. Scooping up Laurent Robinson out of thin air helped immensely , but can you imagine what would have happened if we didn’t hit on that addition? Going into 2012, its clear Dez and Austin are the sure shot #1-#2 guys, but outside of that, the Cowboys…

If your not familiar with Adrian Hamilton let me introduce him to you.  He bounced around major universities (Oklahoma State and Texas Tech) before landing at Prairie View A&M. Why did he leave Oklahoma State? Well that was his first stop after high school. Oklahoma State recruiting staff was trying to recuirt everyone in the country and handed out too many scholarhips. They wanted him to sit out for a year, so instead of doing that he left for Texas Tech. His stop at Tech did not work out either. • Coach Callahan Gives Insight to Offensive Line Moves

    Joe Rodriguez
    5 May 2012 | 6:07 pm
Cowboys Offensive Line Coach, Bill Callahan was interviewed during today’s mini-camp and he gave us some insight to where our new free agent offensive linemen will play. Callahan said Nate Livings would play LG and Mackenzy Bernadeau at RG; in addition, Bill Nagy will compete at center where he’ll hope to displace Phil Costa. Costa had a very frustrating and inconsistent time at center for us last year, and its one position that has the biggest question mark on the offensive line going into this season. Tyron Smith transition to LT is going well in drills according to Callahan,…

Its absurdly early to try to deduce how any of these rookies will be able to contribute or become starters for the Cowboys, but some of what Ive been reading online and some of Jerry’s comments are encouraging for sure. One thing you’ll know is that Jason Garrett is still taking Parcell’s “earn the star” philosophy. None of the rookies had star helmets, and they’ll need to be earned as training camp and preseason progress. admin
    1 May 2012 | 2:09 pm
The Dallas Cowboys selected DE Tyrone Crawford with the 81st overall pick (3rd round) of the 2012 NFL Draft.  Crawford is a big guy at 6’4″, 285 pounds and he runs a 4.77 40.  He is a good athlete who is quick off the ball and he’s strong at the point of attack.  He’s more of a power player than a speed rusher though.  Crawford played in 12 games (11 starts) at Boise State last year and he had 44 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries.  He has played in 25 games (11 starts) in his two years at Boise State and he had…

  • Draft Review

    29 Apr 2012 | 8:42 pm
The draft was fast and furious this year.  The Cowboys came away with the consensus #1 defensive player in the draft.  And they managed to find depth at several other key positions.  I'm not going to fool myself and say this is the turning point for the Cowboys.  Every team got better over the weekend according to the draft experts.  We won't really know how good this draft was until we look back a few years from now.But we can still look at the draft from the perspective of filling holes on the roster.  The Cowboys didn't find answers at every area of need but…
  • Cowboys Fill Another Big Need in Round 3

    27 Apr 2012 | 9:40 pm
So the Cowboys didn't do anything crazy today.  They had the #81 pick and they sat around for a round and a half and picked at #81.  And with that pick they took Tyrone Crawford, a defensive end out of Boise State.  Crawford is 6'4" and weighs in at 275 lbs.  That is a little small for a 3-4 end so I have to believe the Cowboys are thinking he can add some weight to his frame. He had 6.5 sacks last year as a starter and 7 sacks the year before playing a reserve role.  So he can get pressure on the quarterback.  My concern with his size will be how well he can hold…

It has finally arrived.  The most exciting part of the offseason has to be the NFL draft.  And with the Cowboys holding the 14th pick we likely won't have to wait long for the Cowboys to add someone to the team.  There are some scenarios where the Cowboys could trade up.  There are scenarios where the Cowboys could trade down.  And there are scenarios where the Cowboys could pick at #14.  That is what makes the draft so interesting.  No one knows what will happen until the draft plays out.I'll be happy if the Cowboys pick a defensive lineman with their first…

    11 May 2012 | 8:41 am
I just read a piece that brings up a decent point, but one that is a little bit too overdone for the persons in the comparison.  Yes, Mark Cuban needs to keep his championship coach, but, I don’t think he’s a braggadocio like Jerry Jones.  See, Jerry Jones thought, well, he thought: 1.  He’s smarter than Jimmy Johnson 2.  He’s smarter than all the people Jimmy Johnson hired 3.  He’s smarter than everyone in the world 4.  Because he’s got all the money, he must be in control of EVERYTHING 5.  That the championships would just keep coming because,…

With the Cowboys focusing their draft picks mainly around the defensive side of things, I have gone for an offensive player as my player to watch in the 2012/13 season. That player is James Hanna, the tight end from Oklahoma. This is a useful pick from the Cowboys management, especially as he was taken in the sixth round of the draft. He will accompany Witten and Phillips well, the only 2 tight ends currently on the active roster. Hanna wont have to drive a long way to training, as his hometown is situated in Flower Mound, about a 20 minute drive to Valley Ranch. Ok, Jason Witten didn’t…
  • Undrafted Players Coming To Town

    Patton
    30 Apr 2012 | 12:02 pm
What do undrafted free agents mean for NFL teams?  They mean that the teams have more ways to add to their depth charts.  Because of the expansion to 90 players at the start of training camp, there are more ways for teams to test the waters and bring talent into the fold.  Without these extra players, drafting becomes much more critical.  That’s why the draft went so quickly this year.  Because there’s a rookie salary scale, the draft picks, while valuable, are not as valuable as they were in the past.  You have so many people that you can bring in after the fact that it…
